Do you like to drive? Appear in local court? At all hours of the day? Be in two places at the same time? This job may be for you. Small criminal defense legal practice seeks part-time/Of Counsel/Independent Contractor primarily for local (Town & Village) court appearances.
Through a client-centered approach, Luke Fenchel and Associates strives to gain a deeper understanding of our clients’ circumstances and priorities. Armed with that understanding, we fight for our client’s desired outcomes by strategically raising personalized, persuasive arguments in mitigation, negotiations, and litigation. So what would you be doing? You will engage in intensive client interviewing, counseling, research, writing, oral advocacy and negotiations as part of legal representation; zealously advocate for individuals charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses in local courts (and superior or county court depending on experience) from the time of arraignment through disposition or trial, as well as concurrent proceedings such as Department of Motor Vehicle refusal hearings. You will provide comprehensive, team-based representation collaborating with a team of attorneys and advocates to avoid or mitigate any further legal system involvement or civil consequences that may arise out of clients’ contact with the criminal legal system; and effectively litigate, confidently negotiate and skillfully advocate with judges, prosecutors, and other actors within the systems our clients navigate, including having the opportunity to co-counsel cases in other venues (family court) as necessary and desired.

Well, does this describe you: At least five (5) years of experience in Criminal Law or a related field; Membership in good standing to the New York Bar or eligibility for admission to the New York Bar; Commitment to defending people charged with criminal offenses in the Finger Lakes community; Commitment to challenging systemic injustice and carceral systems; Effective research, writing, and courtroom advocacy skills; Effective organizational and time management skills; Ability to work well independently as well as collaboratively with small team of lawyers and non-lawyers in our criminal defense practices; Ability to multitask, maintain order and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment; Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate, collaborate, and connect with people from various backgrounds, identities, and experiences; Commitment to fierce advocacy, and willingness to strategically challenge authority in defense of clients; Ability to think critically and creatively under pressure; Ability to receive constructive feedback, demonstrate introspection, and shift behavior accordingly; Meticulous attention to detail; Commitment to raising one’s cultural consciousness and challenging oppressive practices on an interpersonal and institutional level; Ability to exercise excellent judgment, discretion, and confidentiality around sensitive issues.
Oh, and a valid driver’s license. And no weeknight plans.
